Between the Silence :: a poetry salon with Yin Yoga

Words are a bridge we travel over to find each other; Poetry can create a channel that goes straight to the heart and bypasses the mind.

In this afternoon gathering led by Suzanne Dunning we will practice gentle, nourishing yoga, share tea and listen to poetry.

The afternoon will be interwoven with harp music played by Summer McCall.

Many people are taught to dislike poetry by teachers or schools that push a mental analysis of poems. We say this is like trying to squeeze a tomato to make it talk.

The key to enjoying poetry is relaxing- as we relax we allow the words to soak into the heart and the soul (whether the mind logically understands them or not is somewhat irrelevent).

In this luxurious afternoon together we will use gentle yoga movements with longer holds to bring us into a state of receptive relaxation- we will soak in the music of the harp and the soul-nourishing words of poets such as Mary Oliver, David Whyte, John O’Donohue, Pablo Neruda, Antonio Machado, and others.

Suzanne loves the way words can bring us into a deeper love of the world- the way poetry can help us fall in love with even the most heart-breaking parts of life.

Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.
