Winter is not the death of the life cycle—it is its crucible.
As the days shorten and the dark season settles in, winter invites us into a quieter rhythm—slowing down, resting, and retreating. In so many stories that shape us, the closing in of the light carries a deep psychological reality as much as a physical one. Wintering is both a season of the natural world and a state of mind: a cyclical rest our bodies require.
Plants and animals don’t fight the winter. They prepare, adapt, and undergo extraordinary metamorphosis and endurance to carry them through. Winter is not the death of the life cycle—it is its crucible.
This three-week morning strength series meets you in that turning. We’ll drop into the darkest part of the year and honor the change of season, using the practice to become good fire tenders. Yoga asks us to tend the fire carefully: to burn away old patterns and burdens that no longer serve, to generate steady warmth in the form of gratitude, and to keep the flame of our inner light alive when the outer world grows cold and dim.
The postures and breath become a way of feeding that fire—building heat without force, strength without strain—so that what remains is clear, steady, and radiant. We’ll work with the classic dance of effort and ease—trying hard without forcing, softening without collapsing—which is harder than it sounds and far more interesting. Most importantly, we’ll keep placing your energy on the two things within our control—effort and attitude—while weathering the winter storms of sideplank and beyond.
All levels welcome. Modifications and ways to go deeper are always available so you can tend your fire just right and build foundational strength for good posture.
